A wedding ring is the piece most people wear longest. So the first question is not how it looks but how it will be worn. A ring you never take off asks for something different than one worn a few times a year.
Purity: hard-wearing or colour?
In the Netherlands an item may only be sold as gold at 585 (14 karat) or above. The other metals in 14 karat make it harder, which is an advantage for a ring that meets door frames and bag handles every day.
22 karat has a deeper, warmer yellow, for people who want that gold colour properly. But it is softer: under heavy daily wear it scratches sooner and loses its shape more easily. Many of our customers are used to 22 karat, so we set out the difference upfront.
There is no right answer; which suits you depends on how often you will wear it and what you will be doing.
Profile and width change on the finger
Two rings sitting side by side in the window feel completely different on the hand. Wide bands wrap more of the finger and feel tighter at the same size, so if you have chosen a wide model, have your size taken with that model rather than a slim sample.
Rings with a slightly domed inner surface (comfort fit) wear more easily day to day. Classic flat-inside bands sit closer to the finger; some people prefer that, others find it restrictive. Try both before deciding.
Have your size measured mid-day
Fingers do not measure the same morning and evening. A size taken early on a cool, rested hand can feel tight later. Have it measured in the middle of the day, with your hands at normal temperature.
Straight after exercise, after coming in from the cold, or with swollen hands, you will get a misleading reading. If you are unsure, come back and check on a different day.
Try both rings together
Most couples look at the rings separately and then try to make them work together. That rarely goes well: whether two bands look right side by side is a different question from whether each is attractive alone. Come in together if you can, and we will measure, fit and compare in one visit.
If an engagement ring is also being worn, bring it. Whether the wedding band sits comfortably beside it only becomes clear with both on the same finger.
Not every ring can be resized later
A plain band can usually go a few sizes either way. But fully set rings, engraved or patterned models and certain shapes have limits. We will not promise anything without seeing the piece, and we tell you whether your chosen model can be resized before you buy.
